Pike Place Levy is Vital to Market’s Future

For more than 100 years, Pike Place Market has been an integral part of Downtown Seattle. The energy of the Market, rich with interesting people, sights, smells and tastes, is part of what makes Downtown Seattle unique. Now, after a century of service, the Market needs help from the businesses and residents of Seattle. This November, Seattle voters will be asked to approve a levy to repair and upgrade the Pike Place Market buildings and infrastructure. DSA has pledged its support to the Pike Place Market levy and encourages its members to turn this support into action at election time.

The Market buildings are more than 100 years old, with the last major renovation and repairs dating back more than 30 years. At that time, Market leaders did not anticipate that upwards of 10 million people would visit the iconic landmark each year. While the buildings in the Market may look all right on the outside, this heavy use has taken its toll. Just below the surface, the buildings need some major attention. Leaky windows, leaky roofs and leaky plumbing have led to substantial water damage. Electrical work and the fire protection systems need upgrading, while earthquake retrofitting is key to ensuring the buildings will survive the next earthquake.

To help pay for the necessary renovations, Mayor Greg Nickels has proposed a six-year levy totaling $75 million for the November 2008 ballot. The levy is a small investment in an irreplaceable landmark and will ensure that the Market will still be around for the next generation of Seattle residents and visitors alike.

The Downtown Seattle Association has enthusiastically endorsed the campaign, along with the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the Building Owners and Managers Association of Seattle. We encourage all members to support the campaign and help make sure the Market wins in November.
