5th Avenue Gets a Makeover

5th Avenue Gets a Summer Makeover

On July 7th, construction began on the 5th Avenue repaving project. Wilder Construction and the Seattle Department of Transportation are working to replace asphalt, repair the concrete or brick base beneath it, and add new or upgraded curb ramps as part of a 2006 “Bridging the Gap” transportation levy approved by voters. Downtown businesses and residents should expect minor delays on 5th Avenue between Marion Street and Denny Way until construction is complete in November.

The repaving project has been split into two phases:

Phase I: Fifth Avenue between Denny Way and Olive Way
    (July - September)

Phase II: Fifth Avenue between Pine Street and Marion St.
    (September – November)

As an added bonus to cyclists in the Downtown core, the
5th Avenue repaving project will include replacement of current drainage grates with bike-friendly alternatives that will not catch bike tires. In addition, the city is adding updated traffic signal detector loops that can sense bicycles waiting for signals to change.

More information on the 5th Avenue repaving project, including schedule details and FAQs, is available at http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/5th_ave_pave.htm or by calling 206-615-0505.
