Downtown Beach Bonanza at Seattle Sandfest

A team of sand sculptors help their
sculpture take shape at Seattle Sandfest 2007

No need to travel to the seashore this summer – Seattle Sandfest brings the beach to Westlake Park on August 23, with sand sculpture competitions, a kid’s sand box, live music and more starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m. with the crowning of a new sand sculpting champion. All proceeds from Seattle Sandfest benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound.

In addition to the more than 25,000 spectators at Seattle Sandfest 2007, last year’s event welcomed 10 teams to showcase their sand-sculpting skills based on the “Sand for all Seasons” theme. Winners from the Coughlin Porter Lundeen team sculpted Snoopy waiting for a visit from the mythical “Great Pumpkin.”

Additional sponsors include Century Square, Denny Triangle Neighborhood, Hertz Equipment Rental, KING 5, Macy's, Magnusson Klemencic, Metropolitan Improvement District, Nordstrom, Nuprecon, Qwest, Skanska, Triamp Music Rentals, Westlake Center and 5th Avenue Theatre.

Volunteers or sand-sculpting teams interested in participating in this year’s event should contact Kasia Prouty (kasiap@downtownseattle.org) for more information.
